A Brief Look Through the Past - May 25th, 2005

Alrighty So it looks like Dodgy Curry joint number 2 is going to be Curry 'n' Hurry. You know its gonna be dodgy when they use 'n' as a word. :) Looks like we're checking it out this sunday. Expect the review sun or mon. Thought I'd list off some of the places I've had indian food before I decided to do the webpage. My opinion is pretty set on these places so I may or may not revisit for the sake of a legitimate full review. But there's always a chance.

Kohi Noor Palace - This was the place that started it all for me. It used to be a scary little dive in a minimall in NE calgary. My work friends got us some takeout to eat for lunch and i was hooked on the butterchicken from the first bite. Their butterchicken is still the 10/10 that i compare the rest to. And their samosa's are amazing. They're huge, and stuffed full and tasty. But greasy as hell. They put them in a paper bag which is then put in a plastic one when you get take-out but by the time you get home...the paper bag has dissolved and theres a puddle of grease in the bottom of the plastic one. They've moved to a much nicer location now but I still prefer takeout only from these guys. Had the buffet once and nothing was labeled, so not very friendly for the newbie, and I think I ate goat by accident.

Bombay Sweet House - Got takeout from their once or twice....I remember it being really tasty but the joint looks dodgy and one of my Indian friends refuses to eat from them because she heard that they have a rat problem. Hmm....maybe this will have to be one of our future trips :)

Calgary Sweet House NE - Been here a few times. Always very tasty. Their buffet is one of the best I've been at. Everything clearly labeled and good variety. They also have a few menu items that are a bit different. I didn't order it but I recall they had a "butter chicken pasta" dish that looked interesting. Basically butter chicken sauce instead of regular tomato sauce on some rotini's or something. Last time I ordered from these guys they were doing some major reno and the menu only had about 6 things you could get. Should be done by now.

Tandoori Hut - This place was located in kensington and I recall it being good. But expensive....guess you're paying for the neighborhood. I'd go again if i was in the neighborhood and had the munchies.

Moti Mahal - This is my friend Kal's favorite place. It was really nice, but I recall it being kinda crowded and their 17th ave location makes it less than ideal to get to. Fantastic food though.

Samosa Garden - Been here a few times....its right by the PLC in NE calgary. Don't know if they're buffet all the time or if i just go at the right times. Buffet has lots of choices with labels on everything as well as brief descriptions of the items. No chance of getting goat by accident here. ;) Personally I find their food to be a bit lacking in pizazz. Its not bad...it just doesn't seem to have the explosion of flavour I expect. May be a good place to take a newbie though, impossible not to find something edible, just the curry-experienced will probably be a bit let down.

Bangladesh Curry Mahal Restaurant - This place was so good I went to it 2 days in a row. Only downside for most of the people reading this is that its located in London. England. So you're not gonna run out for a quick bite if you're reading this in Saskatoon.... I had rogan gosht and chicken tikka masala and both were great, and Ang had butter chicken both times. Only downside was that we went during lunch the first day and apparently they don't fire up the Tandoor oven for lunch. :( It was kinda funny when ang unknowingly ordered about 3 things off the menu that are cooked in the oven and the poor waiter had to tell her over and over she couldn't have that because the oven is not on. :) Otherwise great. And by london standards reasonably priced. I think the 2 meals and a bottle of wine only cost 1 kidney....or was it a lung. I don't remember....freaken pounds sterling. http://www.bangladeshcurrymahal.co.uk/

Masala Express - Got takeout from this place one time only. They went out of business since (I believe) but it doesn't matter, I wouldn't order from them again. Either they serve the blandest curry in the world or we got “Faranged” as matty would say. Honestly presidents choice butter chicken has more flavour than what we got from these guys. High dodginess rating comes automatically by having the word "express" in your name when you're not doing oil changes.

Well thats it for now. Keep an eye on this space for more curry and more of my blabbing.
