Spice Hut - February 4th, 2007 6554 4th Street NE

Domino’s Pizza does more business during the Super Bowl than any other day of the year. So guess where we’re not going to get food from for the big game. Instead of pizza, Ren suggests I go back to Touch of India for more takeout. Seeing as we just ate there 2 days previously and have about another 40 restaurants to review, I opted to see if I could find another place. (matt)

As usual....matt ignores my helpful suggestion and ends up having to work waaaay harder than necessary than if he'd just listened to me.  (ren)

FIRST DOWN: With 3 hours until kickoff, my first stop was a place across from the Downtown Safeway called Lahore Tikka. I remember driving by this place and thinking it would be a good takeout option at some point. Unfortunately, I apparently failed to follow through in a timely manner on this plan because there was a sign on the door stating they were now out of business. RESULT OF PLAY: Penalty. Loss of 10 yards due to Time Count Violation. Repeat First down

FIRST DOWN AND 20 YARDS TO GO:  Sticking to the downtown core, I thought I’d try a place called Ganga Restarant on Stephen Avenue. After shelling out a twoonie for parking, I discovered the restaurant didn’t open until an hour after kickoff. Also, I figured with a name like Ganga that the employees were probably busy smoking ganja and it would open 2 hours late. RESULT OF PLAY: Loss of 5 yards on “the Swinging Gate”.

SECOND DOWN AND 25 YARDS TO GO: Plan C was to drive towards Ren’s house and hit a random curry house on the way. We’ve tried to eat at Delice Café a number of times without much luck. Today was no different. They are closed on Sundays. RESULT OF PLAY: Fumble. Recovered by the offence. Loss of 10 yards.

THIRD AND LONG: Having struck out for an unprecedented third time, I would now have to find a place that never closes. Like a hotel. Mantra is an Indian Restaurant in the Dalhousie Ramada Inn. They are open from breakfast, lunch and dinner. Apparently in addition to being an Indian restaurant, they also have some Spanish influence because they were closed for Siesta from 2PM – 5PM. Grrrrr. RESULT OF PLAY: Double reverse resulting in a loss of 25 yards.

FOURTH DOWN, BALL ON MY GOAL LINE: With 45 minutes to kickoff, Ren advises me to call off the search for curry (ie. Punt). He has finished his game of Super Techmo Bowl and wants to order pizza. Instead, I decide it’s time to delve into the bowels of the playbook (cleaner than the bowels of a giraffe) and try a trick play. I head towards the Northeast and pull into the first random strip mall I can find. Hunterhorn Plaza.

As luck would have it, Spice Hut restaurant is open. The sign says Indian food. Their delivery truck says Pakistani Restaurant. I walk in to find a rather friendly proprietor grilling some Chicken Tikka, while another employee is preparing naan in the tandoor, oddly just behind the counter. I order Butter Chicken for Ren, Rogan Josh for myself and Chicken Tikka for Ang. Ten minutes later, after throwing in some fresh naan (garlic and regular), I’m on my way back to Ren’s house with the take-out. (matt)

While waiting for the food, matt called to tell me he had been successful.  Unfortunately he also missed the kickoff.  So....heres a Madden simulation so he doesn't feel bad. (ren)

The first quarter is coming to a close when I arrive and Dumbass has already polished off a stout or two. As for the food, the Rogan Josh is mediocre at best. Ren’s butter chicken is bizarrely watery. Naan is very ordinary. While we don’t hate the food, there’s no reason to eat at Spice Hut unless you live across the street. RESULT OF PLAY: Fake punt resulting in a gain of 15. Still a zillion yards short of the first down marker. Ball turned over on downs. (matt)

The butter chicken was not very good.  I've had worse....but not lately.  Pretty much all tomato and no cream, and like matt said, very watery.  Not oily....watery.  Weird.  Maybe it was even healthy....but it sure wasn't tasty.  The naan was craptastic.  Ordinary would be too much of a recommendation  (ren)

Moral of the story: Next time just order pizza or go to Touch of India. Spice Hut gets a very generous 5 from me. I wouldn’t put up too much of an argument if Ren wanted to give it a 4.

I give it a 4 (ren)

Not at any of the restaurants:

  1. Jeff George (Native of Indianapolis, former #1 Draft Pick of Colts)
  2. Johnny Unitas (Ethnic Lithuanian, former Baltimore Colt)
  3. Samuel Colt (Gun maker)

Rating:

4/10
